An example of a proposed BRT station in Berkeley.

We invite you to join us in supporting AC Transit's proposed Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project. BRT has the potential to attract many more bus riders in the East Bay and give people a good reason not to use their cars. BRT is an innovative transit system that can play an important role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions by giving people an alternative to the private automobile. At present private automobiles and light trucks are responsible for nearly 50 percent of our greenhouse gas emissions.

Friends of BRT is dedicated to building support for the proposed AC Transit Bus Rapid Transit project, which is designed to provide improved bus service along a route that will link the cities of Berkeley, Oakland, and San Leandro, California.

BRT is different from conventional bus service in many ways.

It uses dedicated lanes, so it avoids traffic congestion and moves riders to their destination fast.

It has specially designed stations that enhance the streetscape.

It goes more frequently, so there's less waiting for the bus.

In short, BRT is a lot like light rail. It’s been described as “light rail on rubber wheels.” But building it costs a fraction of what it takes to build light rail.

This website will continue to provide updates and resources to keep you informed about AC Transit's proposed BRT project.

VOTE NO ON MEASURE KK!

Opponents of the East Bay BRT project have placed Measure KK on the November 2008 Berkeley ballot. The Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters, Mayor Tom Bates, and the entire Berkeley City Council are opposed to KK. Although the measure does not mention the BRT project, it is clearly designed to kill the project. Read more about Measure KK, download a campaign flyer, and sign up to work on the campaign or make a donation by going to

NEXT STEPS WITH BRT

The City of Berkeley will be working on developing “locally preferred alternatives” for Berkeley’s BRT route throughout the fall and winter of 2008-09. Click here to read our position on next steps for BRT.
